WARNING
*****************************************************************
The following installation procedure must be followed exactly.
*****************************************************************
INSTALLING
Log on to the root directory c:\ and use the DOS command MD
to create a sub-directory (I prefer c:\bitdata). Copy BITS.EXE to
the sub-directory you created. Log on to this sub-directory and
create sub-directories for each state or country, using two
letter designators. In the USA use the official postal service
two letter state designators. Log on to each state or country
sub-directory and create sub-directories for all the counties or
blocks you will need. Additional directories may be added later.
DOS will not accept a space in a file or directory name;
therefore, a two word name creates a problem which is overcome by
inserting an underline character between the two words. San Louis
would be entered as San_Louis. All characters over eight are
truncated.
Log on to the bits sub-directory and enter BITS to run the
program.
**********
The bit records created by the program will be assigned to
the proper state or country and county or block sub-directories
and indexed by operator and well name for use by the program.
The program uses 'waiting' as a prompt to allow viewing the
screen presentation. When this prompt appears, execute the menu
request or if there is no menu input required then enter any key.
This action will continue to run the program.
The program stores data in fields with a selected number of
characters allowed for each field, when entering data for each
bit run the number of characters allowed will be indicated on the
screen by colons. When the field is full, the field will not
accept any more data. Some data entry will not fill the entire
field. This does not affect the data entry or program in any
way.
A list of the entry prompts and the maximum number of
characters allowed follows:
Prompt Maximum Example
Enter bit number 2 99
Enter bit size 5 99.99
Enter bit make 3 HTC
Enter bit type 6 OSC1J
Enter serial num 6 123456
Enter jets 10 0910131111
or 5-12/64 or any thing up to 10 characters.
Enter depth out 5 12695
Enter hours run 6 99.99
Enter weight run 3 40
Enter rpm 3 100
Enter deviation 5 1.25
Enter pump pressure 4 1800
Enter pump number 1 2
Enter liner size 5 6.75
Enter pump strokes 3 144
Enter mud weight 4 10.5
Enter viscosity 3 44
Enter dull code T 1 7
Enter dull code B 1 6
Enter dull code G 1 O
Enter remarks 10 set 5-1/2
Enter date 8 09/30/86
After the last data entry, a screen presentation of all data
entered will be presented. If you made an incorrect entry, the
entry can be corrected by making a selection from the menu. When
the item to be corrected appears on screen, write over the
incorrect data. Once the program has been instructed that all
entries are correct, the data is stored in the database. A
separate option is included to correct records if an error is
discovered at a later date.
After the data has been entered and the prompt ask for the
bit number, enter a zero and return to the main menu or continue
with data entry of the next bit run.
Each menu prompt will be explained in the order they appear
on the main menu:
1.Select state and county
or country and block
This option must be run to select the proper path for the
program to use to located the record. It must be run before any
other option is selected. Remember to use the underline character
between two word county names.
2.Select Record
This option will ask for the method to be used in accessing
the bit record. Two options are available. One option will allow
selection by typing in the operator and the well name. The other
option will display the index and ask for the index code number.
When prompted to enter the operator, entering a zero will return
to the main menu. Entering a zero for the index code number will
return to the main menu.
3.Display Record
This option displays the selected record to the screen. Due
to the 80 column display of the screen, the record will be
displayed in screen pages with a pause after each page.
4.Display Summary
This option will display a summary analysis of the entire
record. The following items are displayed:
1.Operator name
2.Well name
3.Location
4.County and State or Block and Country
5.Date of first run
6.Final bit size
7.Number of bits run
8.Final mud weight
9.Final depth
10.Average feet per hour
11.Final remarks
12.Date of last run
5.Display runs >
This option searches the record for bits that made footage
greater than the entered amount, then displays only those bit
records.
6.Display rate >
This option searches the record for bits that drilled faster
than the entered rate, then displays only those bit records.
7.Print record
The print option prints a bit record in the format used by
the petroleum industry. To print a complete record using the
standard print size and spacing requires a wide carriage printer;
however, most systems use an 80 character printer. The print
option allows the user to select the printer type and print the
entire record on an 80 character printer using two sheets of
paper.
8.Enter new data
This option allows entry of new data to a record. Prior to
using this option a record must be selected. The selection may
be an existing record to which a new bit run is added or a new
record being used for the first time. The program will prompt
for the data to be entered and request a confirmation of
correctness prior to adding the information to the data disk in
drive a: The number of characters allowed for each entry will
be indicated by colons. These need not be completely filled and
entering more data than allowed will not affect the program. The
extra data will not be added to the record. The correction menu
will be displayed and the program will ask for a selection of
data to correct. Follow the menu prompts and correct the errors
in the data entry. When the item to be corrected appears on
screen, write over the incorrect data.
9.Start a new record
This option is run only when starting a new record. The
menu will ask for the operator name, well name, Location, County
and State or country and block. The program will set up the
record in the indexed file. A data base will be created to accept
data for the new record and then return to the main menu. The
record is then ready for use by the program.
All stored data which requires calculation, i.e. footage per
bit, footage per hour, etc., is handled internally by the
program.
The CORRECT option allows a bit record to be corrected at
any time. If an error is discovered in a record, the following
procedure is used to correct the record.
Select the record you wish to correct. All entries for the
first bit run will be displayed. A menu selection must be made
for the item which must be corrected. If all entries in the
first record are correct, enter 23 and the program will cycle to
the next bit number. This procedure will move through the
complete bit record. After the corrections are made and you wish
to exit the BITS program, enter 24 and the program will end and
exit to the BITS program.
SOME HINTS
***WARNING***
Do not attempt to manipulate the hierarchical directory
system after it has been set up by the program.
An index of records can be viewed by running the program and
selecting option 2 when asked which option to use in selecting a
record. Enter a zero when asked for the index number and return
to the main menu.
The program provides for the addition of 99999 records to
each county or block sub-directory.
